What to Expect at Your Office Visits

Your First Appointment

At your first visit to New Horizons, Cathey Guthman, RN, our OB nurse for 28 years, will welcome you to the practice, interview you about your medical history, and evaluate your overall health using a battery of seven lab screenings to rule out threats to your health and your baby's, such as anemia, HIV, syphilis, and rubella. Kathy will also check your blood type and RH factor, as well as run an antibody screen.

If you are experiencing spotting or bleeding, or if you're unsure about the date of your last menstrual period, Kathy will schedule an ultrasound exam before your first visit with the doctor. Our ultrasound lab is literally just down the hall from our exam rooms for your convenience.

Subsequent Appointments

Our goal at New Horizons is to treat you like family. We communicate with you one-on-one to make your pregnancy a healthy and positive experience. That's why Dr. Gates personally calls new patients at home before they return for their next visit to welcome them and see if they have any questions.

Two weeks after your first appointment you will meet with your doctor, who will perform a physical exam, discuss the results of the initial lab screenings, and answer any questions you may have. Any treatments that may be required according to the results of the lab screenings, or because of high risk factors, will also be discussed and prescribed at this time.

You'll meet with your doctor once a month until the eighth month of your pregnancy, when your appointments will be scheduled every other week. Your appointments will be scheduled weekly in your ninth month.

Lab Screenings and Ultrasound

A "triple test" lab screening for Down Syndrome and other genetic conditions will be performed between your 15th to 20th week of pregnancy. A final set of lab screenings is scheduled for your 28th week to check for diabetes and anemia.

An ultrasound exam will be scheduled at your 20th week of pregnancy. For your convenience, our ultrasound lab is right here in our office. Your doctor may schedule additional ultrasound exams if your condition warrants it.

If any problems in your pregnancy arise, your doctor may refer you for specialized services at one of our health care affiliates.
