Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS)
You don't have to suffer with monthly PMS. At New Horizons we partner with you to manage and improve your PMS symptoms. After a complete exam to rule out other causes, and depending on your symptoms and overall health, we may recommend treatments such as medication, vitamin supplements, lifestyle and diet changes, and exercise.
Getting a yearly pelvic exam and Pap smear is the most important thing you can do for your health and well being. Pap smears are early detectors of cervical cancer. If your Pap smear results indicate an abnormality, your physician at New Horizons may first order a repeat Pap smear to ensure the accuracy of the results. If abnormal results are still returned, your physician may indicate any or all of the following treatment options:
- Pelvic exam and tests to rule out vaginal infections
- Colposcopy to examine the vagina and cervix
- Cervical biopsy to examine a small amount of cervical tissue to confirm or rule out the presence of cancerous cells
Your physician at New Horizons can help you alleviate or manage pelvic pain by identifying the causes and developing a personalized treatment plan. Some pelvic pain is normal and is related to monthly ovulation or related to pre-menstrual conditions. However, if pelvic pain has become a chronic, annoying disruption in your life, this could indicate a more serious condition. Come to New Horizons for an evaluation of your pain and a personalized treatment plan.
Note: Pelvic pain that comes on suddenly or is severe could indicate a serious condition such as a ruptured tubal pregnancy or appendicitis. Seek emergency medical treatment immediately.
Pregnant?
If there is any chance that you are suffering chronic pelvic pain and may be pregnant, tell your physician. He or she may order a pregnancy test to rule out the possibility.
At New Horizons we can diagnose chronic pelvic pain with a variety of methods, including:
- Pelvic exam
- Ultrasound
- Laparoscopy
- Referral to a specialist, if needed
Chronic Pelvic Pain That Usually Requires Treatment
If pelvic pain is caused by any of the following, your physician will want to develop a treatment plan for you:
- Ovarian cysts
Abnormal growths that can cause painful bleeding into the ovary
- Endometriosis
A condition in which tissue that normally lines the uterus implants outside the uterus
- Fibroids
Common, benign growths in the muscle of the uterus that can cause pelvic pressure if large
- Infection or Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
Caused by bacteria in the lining of the uterus or fallopian tubes
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)
Most often caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea
Treatment Options
Depending on the cause of your pelvic pain, treatment options may include:
- Antibiotics for bacterial infections
- Surgery to remove ovarian growths or large fibroids
- Medication
- Lifestyle changes
At New Horizons we provide treatment for all sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) with the highest professional regard for our patients' confidentiality and individual situations.
STDs are infectious diseases that are transmitted through sexual contact. Some of the most common STDs are:
- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
- Chlamydia
- Genital herpes
- Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs)
- Gonorrhea
- Syphillis
- Genital warts
Other conditions that may also be sexually transmitted are:
- Vaginal yeast infections
- Trichomoniasis
- Scabies
- Pubic lice
- Bacterial vaginosis
Note that many STDs may not cause any symptoms at first, and that some STD symptoms may imitate other diseases. Also, some STDs can be passed from a mother to her baby either before or during birth and can be life threatening to the baby.
If you suspect that you have symptoms of an STD, or if you believe you have been exposed to an STD, call our office for an appointment today. Prompt treatment can often prevent future, potentially more serious complications.
Prevention of STDs
Abstinence from sexual intercourse is the surest way to prevent contracting an STD. However, sexually active women can protect themselves by taking precautions such as these:
- Have sexual relations only in a monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner
- Use condoms
- Have regular checkups for STDs
- Be aware of the symptoms of STDs
- Seek medical treatment if any symptoms develop
Menopause is a life-season of emotional and spiritual renewal for many women, but for some, uncomfortable physical symptoms can interfere with this special time in a woman's life. New Horizons offers comprehensive care to help women in menopause and in the pre- or peri-menopausal stages stay healthy and feel their best.
Menopause is defined as the stage of life when a woman's menstrual periods stop occurring regularly and eventually cease permanently. Menopause is considered to be complete after a woman has not had a menstrual period for one full year.
Many women begin to experience symptoms during pre- or peri-menopause, the transitional phase before menopause when a woman's hormonal levels start to change, causing the decrease of estrogen and progesterone. Most of the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause are caused by the decline in estrogen levels.
Menopause can occur any time between the ages of 40 and 55. The average age is 51. Premature menopause may occur in women under 40 if there is ovarian failure due to disease or if surgery to remove the ovaries is performed.
Symptoms of Menopause
The following are common symptoms of menopause, but not all women may experience them. Some women who do have symptoms may find them severe, while others may not be bothered by them at all.
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal atrophy/dryness
- Relaxation of pelvic muscles
- Dizziness, palpitations
- Increase in facial hair
- Fatigue, irritability, and feelings of stress
Treatment for Women in Menopause and Peri-menopause
Your New Horizons physician will partner with you to work out a treatment plan based on your age, current health, medical history, current symptoms, and above all, your preferences. Treatment options may include:
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
- Prescribing calcium or other medications to strengthen the bones
- Emphasis on health diet and regular exercise
Diagnostic testing for women in menopause and peri-menopause may include:
- Pap smear
- Mammogram
- Blood work
- Ultrasound of the uterus
- Bone-density screening
HRT: Is It Right for Me?
With Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), menopausal and peri-menopausal women are prescribed a combination of estrogen and progesterone either in pill form, transdermal skin patches, or as a cream. For many women, HRT provides much desired relief from severe menopausal symptoms. Your New Horizons physician will partner with you to help you understand the benefits and risks of HRT and help you make the right decision for you.
